Milestone Dental Clinic- where we have been
and where we are going…
Milestone Dental Clinic opened its doors in December of 1999. Milestone, Inc. opened the clinic after continually not being able to find a practice equipped to handle the special needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
A grant was awarded by the Illinois Department of Human Services Office of Developmental disabilities to Milestone, Inc. to help build a dental program that would serve individuals with developmental disabilities in the 13 counties of Northwest Illinois. In 2005 the service area was expanded to 18 counties in Northern Illinois.
The current clinic administrator was hired in June 1999 and the first patients were seen in December 1999. The clinic completes about 450 patient visits per month. Due to the overwhelming need for our services, in December of 2004 the clinic was forced to close the practice to new patients for a short time, as there were no available appointments for several months.
Recently, through the generosity of the Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation, Milestone Dental Clinic has expanded to double its original size. Three additional operatories were added along with a second full-time dentist. Children under 21 with developmental disabilities will be the target patients for the expansion. Treating children is important to us because we believe that the earlier we can treat a patient the better. We can prevent tooth decay and gum disease before they even start.
The current dental staff includes, Dr. Jason Grinter and the auxiliary staff. One full-time dental hygienist is currently employed at the clinic with plans to add another hygienist in the near future. The clinic Administrator is Kathy Olson, who is also a hygienist.
